"Wind" - Japanese-Canadian Fishermen’s Monument, 2002

Also known as the Nikkei Fishermen’s Monument, this work was created to honour the contributions made by the Japanese-Canadian Fishermen to B.C.’s fishing industry. The organizing committee were comprised of senior fishermen who were interested in paying tribute to their fellow colleagues who had past in recent years. I remember sitting with these men to discuss the progress of the project and feeling a heaviness in the air. Being mindful of their painful experience in Canadian history during the Second World War, I felt a sense of duty to express in this sculpture, this feeling that was kept hidden and never discussed during our meetings. The title of the work makes reference to ‘Second Wind’ as a way to remember our past and to hope for a bright future in spite of tragedy.
