"Wind" - Japanese-Canadian Fishermen Memorial, 2002

This memorial was created to honour the contributions made by the Japanese-Canadian Fishermen to BC's fishing industry. The organizing committee members were comprised of senior fishermen who wanted to pay homage to their friends and family who had past in recent years. I remember sitting with these men to discuss the progress of the work; there was a feeling of heaviness and silence in the air. Being mindful of their painful experiences of forced relocation, confiscation of property, seperation from family, and internment, at the hands of the Canadian government in the Second World War, I felt a strong sense of duty to communicate in the sculpture, this feeling that was suppressed and never discussed in our meetings. The title is taken from to the expression 'Second Wind' to demonstrate their courage and resilience during times of difficulty.
