Statement on HIV Sculptures

This work was created in the mid 1990’s when the topic of HIV/AIDS was much talked about. Viruses are invisible - I had a desire to see them larger and made out of permanent material. I wanted to create something tangible or at least be able to feel it with my hand.  As the topic of HIV/AIDS began to make news and headlines in the media, I became more curious as to what they look like. I began looking at various medical textbooks and I was intrigued by their threatening but stunning shapes. V-1 and V-2 was one of the first of the sculptures I made in the series. I exhibited this work as well as “Sick Man” in a gallery in NYC during my four year residence in N.J. My interest in this series was created out of a need to see something otherwise invisible.
